Since 2012, GreenLamp has reached over one million women and touched the lives of five million people in rural Ethiopia.

Their mission is to empower women and girls through education, health-care and technology, and in doing so allow them to effect social and economic change in their own communities.

The Project:

GreenLamp and Hamlin Midwife Alumni Network (HMAN) 2023 Regional Meetings for 220 midwives, 21,738 €

GreenLamp graduates from the Hamlin College of Midwives earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Midwifery after four years of training, including extensive supervised hospital and health center practice. Qualified Midwives are then allocated to a rural health center, in their own region for four years. The midwives work in very tough conditions at health centers that are underfunded and under-sourced. As Hamlin midwives are seen as well-trained, compassionate, and experienced midwives, they quickly become the leader in the midwifery clinic in the health center.

To support and energize the midwives under these tough conditions, the Hamlin Midwives Alumni Network (HMAN) was initiated by GreenLamp in collaboration with Hamlin College of Midwives (HCM) in 2018. HMAN is focused on every HCM’s graduated midwife, to provide encouragement, motivation, and support from their colleagues. It has the following objectives:

  1. to encourage Midwives to continue working as a midwife in Health Centres, Outreach clinics, hospitals, universities, etc
  2. to maintain and extend skills and knowledge of midwifery practices
  3. to develop leadership skills
  4. to share success stories, on the job learning, and best practices
  5. to build a community/network of support – midwives supporting midwives

LEARN MORE ABOUT GREENLAMP

GreenLamp funds the education of midwives at the Hamlin College of Midwives in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Once degree qualified, the midwives work in rural health centers throughout the country, and act as role models for younger women in their communities. Training at Hamlin also gives young women a professional qualification and a chance to earn their own wage, breaking the cycle of inter-generational poverty and encouraging others to aspire to the same.

What We Do

Driven by the conviction that when you educate a woman, you educate a community, our long-term strategy rests on three core concepts: LEARN, LIGHT and LEAD.

LEARN

Education unlocks brighter futures, both for individuals and for entire communities. By sponsoring Ethiopian women to complete their midwifery training we have seen a 67% increase in the number of safe deliveries, a 40% increase in the four prenatal visits recommended by the World Health Organisation, 26% more families bring their newborn in for post-natal check-up and almost 80% more women come for family planning and reproductive health advice.

LIGHT

Solar Suitcases provide reliable lighting, communication and power for rural delivery wards via sustainable, clean technology. The simple provision of facilities that most of us take for granted creates a safer, more dignified environment and a measurable decrease in traumatic birth injuries and preventable deaths.

LEAD

The ripple effect of education and technology is incredibly powerful, especially in developing nations. Improved midwifery care reduces birth injuries that can leave women stigmatized and isolated, while helping even just a few young women to access education creates community role models and leaders for the future.

OUR BELIEF

  • When you educate a woman, you educate a community,

IMPACT OF OUR ACTIONS:

  • Over 220 Solar Suitcases have been delivered in rural areas
  • 20 young midwifes have been sponsored at university
  • 67 % increase of safe deliveries in rural health centers
  • 40 % increase in the 4 prenatal visits
  • 80 % more women come for family planning

WHY WE CHOSE TO WORK IN ETHIOPIA…

The World Health Organization advocates “skilled care at every birth”, but in Ethiopia it is estimated that a midwife is present at only 10% of all births. Skilled midwives are critical in the prevention of avoidable traumatic birth injuries such as fistula, which cause great suffering during labor and often for the rest of a woman’s life.

A Message from Lisbeth

We are very proud to help empower and support the midwives in rural Ethiopia.

The role these educated young ladies have in their society must not be underestimated.

A vital part of the midwife’s role is working in their own region, in the local language, understanding the traditions, and the cultural challenges, and consequently being seen as important role models for rural women and girls.

The long-term impact is to more efficiently lower Maternal Mortality and Infant Mortality rates in underserved communities in rural Ethiopia.

Let us together make life better for millions of women and children in the world.

With love for Humanity,

Lisbeth,
